Developmentally Appropriate Practice and Intentionality and Developmentally Appropriate Practice and Play address the ways in which DAP supports intentional teaching and play - key elements of effective teaching of young children. Here are the Big Ideas presented in Developmentally Appropriate Practice and Intentionality and Developmentally Appropriate Practice and Play.

The programs are designed as self-paced, interactive learning opportunities that can be used by individuals as a self-study resource. The videos also feature classroom scenes depicting intentionality in action and play in programs for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, and primary grade children; and voices of experts: teachers, administrators, researchers, and others.

Description of NAEYC's Learning Programs on Developmentally Appropriate Practice

The National Association for the Education of Young Children has long been the leading voice in defining, disseminating, and recognizing best practice in the care and education of children, birth through age 8. In 2009, the Association released the much-anticipated third edition of its principles and guidelines for teachers and others in the field of early childhood education. These principles and guidelines describe what we call “Developmentally Appropriate Practice” — that is, teaching practices that ensure that young children learn and develop to their fullest potential. Well grounded in the research on child development and educational effectiveness, and carefully reviewed by experts, Developmentally Appropriate Practice serves as a fundamental guide for all who work with young children.

Part of the NAEYC mission is to help our members and others in the early childhood field stay current with the research on child development and learning. Many outstanding professionals in the fields of early education, developmental psychology, and related disciplines—teacher educators, program administrators, teachers, researchers, and others—contributed their knowledge and expertise to the updating and revising of this third edition.  You will hear from many of them—as well as view examples of best practices in action—in our professional development series on the new DAP, developed by NAEYC to help early childhood educators understand and implement the new Developmentally Appropriate Practice.
