NAEYC Governing Board Affiliate Liaison

Every two years the NAEYC Affiliate Council is asked to submit candidate names for the Affiliate Liaison Governing Board position. The qualifications for Board members also guide the selection of Affiliate Liaison Board member candidates, with the additional criteria of demonstrated knowledge of and experience with NAEYC’s current Affiliate structure.

Affiliate Liaison candidates appear on the election slate in even years; therefore, the Affiliate Council identifies potential candidates for the Nominating Panel’s consideration in odd years.

Two of the 12 seats on the Governing Board (excluding officers) are reserved as Affiliate Liaison seats. Candidates for the Affiliate Liaison are elected by the full membership and have the same rights and responsibilities as other Board members.

Selection Process

The Affiliate Council President and Chair of the NAEYC Nominating Panel issue the call for nominations for the Affiliate Liaison in the spring of odd years (2011, 2013, 2015…) to the members of the Affiliate Council. The same application process is used by individuals seeking consideration as an Affiliate Liaison candidate as that used by those seeking to become a Board At-Large candidate.

Affiliate Liaison candidates have an earlier deadline to submit their materials. The submitted materials are reviewed by the Affiliate Council Executive Committee, which serves as the Affiliate Council Nominating Committee. The Executive Committee reviews the candidate applications, deliberate, and submits their recommendations to the Affiliate Council at their June meeting. The goal is have a pool of at least 4 names to recommend to the NAEYC Nominating Panel. Those recommended to the Nominating Panel participate in the group interview process held in September in Washington, DC. (Note: participation in the group interview process is mandatory to be considered for the final slate.) The final slate is approved by the NAEYC Governing Board in the fall and includes two candidates for the Affiliate Liaison position in the years that this position is available.

Potential candidates who submit information but are not selected by the Affiliate Council as candidates for the Affiliate Liaison position are also considered by the Nominating Panel as part of the pool for the two At-Large positions.
