NAEYC's accreditation system is committed to being appropriately responsive to programs that are unable to meet specific deadlines due to unforeseen circumstances. This will be accomplished by allowing programs to request an extension in submission deadlines for an Application, Candidacy Materials, Annual Report or Site Visit. Extensions may be requested by programs that experience temporary operational disruptions or other disruptions that significantly impact the program's ability to meet specific deadlines.
Extensions due to Temporary Operational Disruptions
Extensions may be granted to programs that experience a temporary operational disruption in their service. The NAEYC Academy defines temporary operational disruption as a time-limited event (not to exceed 30 days) that inhibits or prevents a program from providing its established services. Operational disruptions may include serious weather events or other natural or human-made disasters.
Extensions due to Other Disruptions
Extensions may also be granted to programs that experience a disruption that significantly impacts its ability to meet a submission deadline or submit to a site visit even if the disruption does not prevent the program from providing its established services.
Considerations include, but are not limited to:
- Death of Administrator
- Health emergency of Primary or Secondary Contacts (ie: Cancer, major surgery, family tragedy)
- Death of a child or staff member
- Operational disruption such as flooding due to plumbing issues, vandalism, renovations beyond the control of the program
- Military deployments affecting a significant portion of families served by the program
Changes in administration and/or teaching staff are not grounds for an extension.
Review of Extension Requests
Each extension request is reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine the severity of the disruption and its impact on the program's ability to continue its services and meet NAEYC Accreditation requirements.
In determining whether to grant an extension, the following will be considered:
- length of the extension
- current accreditation status
- program history
- reason for the extension
The NAEYC Academy will provide a written extension decision within 3-4 weeks of the submission date. Extensions are granted on a very limited, case-by-case basis.
Submission Instructions
To request an extension on submission deadlines for an Application, Candidacy Materials, Annual Report or Site Visit, programs must complete an Extension Request Form. Programs must submit related documentation with the Extension Request form.
