NAEYC Training-of-Trainers Workshops
NAEYC Training-of-Trainers (TOT) programs are intensive one-day experiences that provide participants with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of adult learning as well as specific content knowledge. At the end of the workshop participants will have the skills, knowledge, and materials to train the staff at their own center or school on the topics presented.
Who should attend a TOT Workshop?
- Directors of center-based child care, Head Start, or part-day programs
- Elementary school principals including those who serve prekindergarten students
- Mentor teachers, coaches, and other staff with training responsibilities in early childhood programs
Preconference Training of Trainers:
- Developmental screening and classroom-based assessment of preschoolers: An introductory training
This full-day session is a Training-of-Trainers (TOT) program for administrators of programs serving preschool (3- to 5-year-old) children—community-based program directors and elementary school principals. Participants in this TOT session will then conduct NAEYC’s new training program on developmental screening and classroom-based assessment for their program’s teaching teams.
Developmental Screening and Classroom-based Assessment of Preschoolers: An Introductory Training Program is a series of workshops designed as basic training for teaching staff in center- and school-based programs for preschool children. NAEYC designed this program to meet several goals:
· Build the capacity of the early childhood education field, consistent with NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standard: Assessment of Child Progress
· Assist early childhood professionals and programs to integrate within their pedagogical practices and curriculum models a better understanding of children’s developmental needs and learning challenges
· Increase teaching staff’s understanding of the various types of child assessment in early childhood education and the purpose and process for each type
· Support teaching staff in their ability to use developmental screening and ongoing classroom-based assessment to inform instruction.
The primary training approach is a workshop format (face-to-face training). The program consists of six modules, augmented by self-study and hands-on experiences with the children in the participants’ groups and their families. Each module can be conducted as a 1½ - 2 hour session or modules can be combined for longer sessions.
Participants in this TOT will receive the NAEYC publication Basics of Assessment and a Trainer’s Manual that includes information for conducting the six sessions—the Timeframe for conducting each session, expected outcomes for participants, materials needed to conduct each session, prior-to-session directions, and trainer’s notes. Training materials also include a DVD with video clips used in several sessions and a CD with PowerPoint slides and PDFs of training “props.” Participants also will receive an Assessment Poster and electronic versions of the teaching staff’s Participant Notebook (handouts and other resources).
Registration - $325 for members, $390 for nonmembers. Includes materials, continental breakfast, lunch, and light refreshments.
- Communication Skills for Challenging Conversations: A Family-Centered Approach
This full-day session is a Training-of-Trainers (TOT) program for administrators of early childhood programs, education coordinators, and off-site trainers who have experience conducting training for teaching staff and facilitating discussions. Participants in this TOT session will then conduct NAEYC’s new training program on communication skills for challenging conversations for their program’s teaching teams.
Communication skills for challenging conversations is a series of modules designed as basic- to mid-level training for teaching staff in programs for children 0 to 8 years old. NAEYC designed this program to meet several goals:
· Understanding of the concepts that are the foundation or framework for family-centered care, to prepare them for the parent-teacher partnership, and to help them to build these partnerships;
· Increase early childhood professionals
· Create a safe forum for early childhood professionals’ reflection and discussion about parent-teacher partnerships;
· Provide an opportunity for early childhood professionals to witness communication skills in action and to practice newly acquired skills; and
· Build the capacity of the early childhood education field, consistent with the NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standard 7, Families, and that standard’s Accreditation Criteria, such that early childhood practice improves in appropriate and effective ways.
Participants in this TOT will receive:
The Trainer’s Manual with information for conducting the five modules—the trainer’s notes, timeframe for conducting each session, expected outcomes for participants, materials needed to conduct each session, and prior-to-session directions;
A DVD with video clips depicting parents and teachers engaged in challenging conversations;
A CD with PowerPoint slides, the elements of the Participant Notebook (handouts, a journal, and other resources), and additional materials needed to conduct the training; and
A copy of the book From Parents to Partners: Building a Family-Centered Early Childhood Program by Janis Keyser (Redleaf Press, 2006).
Registration - $325 for members, $390 for nonmembers. Includes materials, continental breakfast, lunch, and light refreshments.
