Stand for Children
on the World Wide Web

Last year on June 1, over 300,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC to show their commitment to improving the quality of life for all children. This year, you can find out how to take part in local events and show your commitment directly through the Virtual Stand for Children.

This two week Internet-based campaign runs from May 25 to June 7. Stand for Children is publicizing the event, providing organizing information, responding to people's questions, and asking people to share why they stood for children -- all through the Virtual Stand for Children web site (http://www.stand.org).

Now web surfers can get involved in coordinating this year's events with the click of a mouse. The campaign has three main components.

The Virtual Stand for Children web site

This web site features:

  • The chance to join many thousands of others in publicly expressing their commitment to children by signing the Virtual Petition for Healthy Children.
  • Concrete information about what you can do to improve the lives and health of children in your community, with special tips for parents.
  • Forums allowing supporters of children to share their ideas and experiences.
  • A milagros (miracles) section that allows children to share their wishes for the future.
  • An opportunity to experience the June 1 events planned around the country.
  • Feature stories on the work that the nearly 200 Children's Action Teams have been doing since June 1, 1996.

A world wide web banner campaign

Stand for Children is inviting companies, organizations and individuals to demonstrate their commitment to children by featuring one of their Virtual Stand for Children banners linked to the Virtual Stand for Children web site during the two week event.

An e-mail pledge campaign

The Virtual Petition for Healthy Children calls on businesses, community, religious and political leaders to help ensure that all children have the health coverage they need to grow and learn and become productive adults. For every e-mail received, Silicon Graphics Computer Systems will contribute 10 cents to a scholarship fund for young people who have beaten enormous odds in order to become leaders and academic standouts.

The e-mail pledge reads:

To The Community, Business, and Government Leaders of America:

We call on you to Stand For Children by ensuring every child a Healthy Start -- with the health coverage they need to grow and learn and become productive adults. It is unacceptable that America has 10 million uninsured children, most of whom live in working families.
