What is a CEU?

CEUs are continuing education units. One CEU is the equivalent of 10 contact hours of participation in a learning program.

Requirements for continuing education vary among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Professional standards for early childhood professionals:

  • Minimum preservice and ongoing training required by state child care licensing regulations for center teachers and directors and family child care providers are available from the National Child Care Information and Technical Assistance Center (NCCIC) at http://nccic.org/topics/topic/index.crm?tpicId=28
  • Qualifications and ongoing professional development requirements for teachers in state prekindergarten programs are available from the National Institute

What must I do to receive my CEUs and Certificate?

To receive your CEU certificate, you will be required to:

  • complete at least 95% of face-to-face learning events or 100% of computer-based, self-paced learning events in the specified time frame.
  • participate in and complete an assessment to verify knowledge learned at the end of the event.

After NAEYC confirms that you have successfully completed the learning event, your record will be updated after 10 business days. We will mail a CEU certificate to you and store your information in our learner database.

Can I request a duplicate CEU certificate or transcript for my records?

A learner can request his/her transcript to be sent to him/her or an individual or organization that he/she authorizes after 10 business days following a learning event. Learning event participants have the following rights regarding transcripts:

  • The right to inspect and review his/her transcript at any time
  • The right to challenge (seek correction) of the contents of the transcript
  • The right to file a written appeal, if necessary, for fair consideration of such a challenge
  • The right to place an explanatory note in the record in the event that a challenge of contents is unsuccessful

Requests to receive a transcript and authorizations to send transcripts to an individual or organization must be provided to NAEYC in writing. NAEYC will mail transcripts as requested within 30 days of receipt of the request.
