NAEYC Radio presents…

Avoiding Preschool Expulsions

(Washington, D.C.) – This month’s NAEYC Radio features Dr. Walter S. Gilliam, who explains ways to avoid preschool expulsions. Dr. Gilliam is the director of The Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy and an assistant professor of Child Psychiatry and Psychology at the Child Study Center at Yale School of Medicine.

Rae Pica and Mark R. Ginsberg interviewed Dr. Gilliam in this month’s segment of NAEYC Radio, a program brought to you by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the BAM Radio Network.

In this segment, Dr. Gilliam explains that helping to combat expulsions is necessary to ensure that children who have behavior issues remain in high-quality early childhood programs, where the positive impact on children is immense. He also expresses most teachers’ desire to gain better training in classroom and behavioral management in order to prevent higher rates of expulsion, and the need for parents and teachers to develop better relationships. “I have never seen a child expelled from a classroom where the teacher and parents have a good relationship,” he says.

Dr. Gilliam is also a senior advisor to NAEYC and a fellow at the National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families.

Rae Pica is the director of Moving and Learning and co-founder of the BAM Radio Network.
Mark R. Ginsberg, Ph.D., is the executive director of NAEYC.

The BAM Radio Network was originally launched as a resource for parents, aimed at delivering the most reliable information on early childhood development and developmentally appropriate parenting to busy moms and dads. Created by leading early childhood experts, the programming quickly became a popular resource among teachers and educators and was expanded to include an Educators' Channel.

Founded in 1926, the National Association for the Education of Young Children has nearly 90,000 members worldwide. The association is the largest and most influential voice for early childhood education professionals and the field of early childhood education in the United States.
