NAEYC Publishes Book on Leadership
in Early Childhood Education
Author and nationally known presenter Holly Elissa Bruno explores the human side of management and the role of emotional intelligence in effective leadership
WASHINGTON—The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is pleased to announce the publication of What You Need to Lead an Early Childhood Program: Emotional Intelligence in Practice by Holly Elissa Bruno. This new guidebook offers practical, research-based guidance for current and aspiring early childhood administrators.
This important book covers all traditional early childhood administration topics, from financial management to marketing and development. What sets it apart from other books on leadership, however, is that it recognizes and explores the human side of management and the critical role of relationships and emotional intelligence in effective leadership.
“Being the boss is tough. Most leadership rules are unwritten or even, unspoken. I wrote this leadership guidebook to tell the truth about what you need to lead, from the outside in,” said Holly Elissa Bruno, author of What You Need to Lead an Early Childhood Program.
Readers will discover how emotional intelligence is a crucial leadership competency and learn what the latest scientific research says about why some relationships click and others fail. Bruno challenges unwritten rules about leadership and covers relevant issues early childhood leaders face, including staff gossip, funding troubles, angry parents, and more.
“By connecting emotional intelligence to leadership, Holly fills a void that exists in the field. Her case studies and real life scenarios allow the reader to relate to and solve everyday problems in a manner that supports how early childhood practitioners think, feel, and practice,” said Sue Offutt, Executive Director of the McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership.”
A self-described “recovering” attorney, Bruno previously served as assistant attorney general for the state of Maine and assistant dean at the University of Maine School of Law. She is an alumna of Harvard University's Institute for Educational Management and she currently teaches leadership and management courses nationwide for Wheelock College. In addition, she is an online radio show host on the BAM Radio Network and a sought-after public speaker.
What You Need to Lead an Early Childhood Program: Emotional Intelligence in Practice ($38.00; 320 pages; ISBN 978-1-928896-80-7) is available for sale from NAEYC’s Online Store. Review copies are available upon request.
