In spring 2010 the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media (Fred Rogers Center) embarked on a revision of the NAEYC 1996 position statement, Technology and Young Children—Ages 3 to 8. The purpose of this position statement is to provide a framework to guide practice in the selection, use, integration, and evaluation of technology tools and screen media in early childhood settings serving children birth through age eight. The new position statement, Technology in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth through Age 8, when finalized, will be issued jointly by NAEYC and the Fred Rogers Center.
In July 2010 NAEYC members and other organizations were invited to review and provide suggestions for consideration in the revision of the 1996 position statement. We received many comments and made every attempt to address them in the latest draft of the revision.
In May 2011, the latest draft was posted for public comment. We received many comments and suggestions, which NAEYC and the Fred Rogers Center will review and consider for the final draft. The final draft will be submitted to the NAEYC Board of Directors and the Fred Rogers Center leadership for approval.
The revised position statement, Technology in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth through Age 8, will be published in spring 2012.
