Online Guidelines and Resources

Online guidelines and resources are available to help early childhood professionals become well- informed consumers of research.

Child Care and Early Education Research Connections’ “Understanding Research” includes a section on assessing research quality and a glossary of research terms.

The National Center for the Dissemination of Disability Research has a Focus: Technical Brief on “What Are the Standards for Quality Research?”

McREL (Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning) and ECS (the Education Commission of the States) developed “A Policymakers’ Primer on Education Research:  How to Understand, Evaluate, and Use It”

The National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) supported the development of  “Using Research and Reason in Education”  by Paula J. Stanovich and Keith E. Stanovich. The full document and a booklet for K-3 teachers is called, “What is Scientific Research?”

The U.S. Department of Education also developed a brief booklet intended to provide backgrounds on scientifically based research for teachers. The report is called, “Identifying and Implementing Educational Practices Supported by Rigorous Evidence: A User Friendly Guide.”
