Baking Bread Encourages Many Kinds of Learning (cont.) - Page 3

Here's a quick and easy bread recipe to try with your class.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1 pkg. dry yeast

1 tsp. salt

2 tbsp. honey

2 tbsp. vegetable oil

1 cup hot water

1 cup white flour

nonstick spray

measuring cups

measuring spoons

gallon-size plastic resealable bag (or largest size available)

dishtowel

loaf pan

Directions

• Pour whole wheat flour, yeast, and salt in bag

• Seal bag and shake

• Open bag and add oil, honey, and water

• Seal bag, squeezing out air

• Squeeze ingredients to mix

• Open bag and add white flour

• Seal again and squeeze and knead bag for 10 minutes

• Place bag in warm place, such as a sunny windowsill or warm stovetop, and cover with a dishtowel (to keep dough dark and warm)

• Let rise for about 1 hour (dough doubles
in size)

• Spray loaf pan with nonstick spray

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees

• Punch dough down through bag

• Remove dough from bag and place in pan

• Cover pan with dishtowel and set aside

• Let dough rise until it reaches top of pan’s sides

• Place pan in oven and bake until golden (about
35 minutes)

• Let bread cool before serving
