The Apple Seed Activities

Discussion Questions

  • Where do you see apples? Where do apples come from? What color are apples? What kinds of apples have you tried?

Physical

  • Invite children to act out the words of the song – planting, watering, growing, eating apples, and pretending to have a tummy ache.

Cognitive

  • Purchase red, yellow, and green apples. Talk with children about the names of the different apples and have an apple taste test.
  • Invite children to predict how many apple seeds are in each apple. Then count them. Make a graph showing predictions and actual numbers of seeds.
  • Use the apples to make applesauce or apple butter with the children. A crock pot is an easy way to do this.
  • Talk to the children about Johnny Appleseed. His real name was John Chapman. He was born September 26, 1774 in Massachusetts. Johnny Appleseed spent 49 years of his life in the American wilderness planting apple seeds. He created apple orchards in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. After 200 years, some of those trees still bear apples. Johnny Appleseed’s dream was for a land where blossoming apple trees were everywhere and no one was hungry. Johnny Appleseed died in 1845. It was the only time he had been sick - in over 70 years!
  • Read a book to the children, such as Johnny Appleseed by Steven Kellogg or Johnny Appleseed by Jodie Sheperd.

Musical Listening

  • The prominent instrument in this arrangement is the drums. Invite the children to play or pretend to play the drums as they sing along.
