How to be a Good Citizen Activities

Print Bookmark and Share

Vocabulary Words

  •  Introduce the words citizen and citizenship.

Discussion Questions

  • This song provides an opportunity for talking and singing about good citizenship. Preschoolers can understand this concept if it is presented at their own level. Being proud of your school, your family, or your community is within a preschool child’s cognitive grasp.
  • Talk about some of the good citizens in the community. Who keeps the community safe, clean, and interesting? Who takes care of the family, the school, the home?

Cognitive

  • Ask questions such as “How can you be a good citizen at school?” or “What makes you proud of our class?” Use the children’s answers to substitute for the words in the song. For example:
-Picking the toys up off the floor, off the floor, off the floor.
-Hanging the pictures on the wall, on the wall, on the wall.
  • Invite children to draw examples of good citizens keeping the community safe, clean, and interesting.

Musical Listening

  • Accompany the song with tambourines, sand blocks, and rhythm sticks. Use words that repeat, like “day” and “street,” as opportunities for rhythm instrument solos.

Reminder: When picking up trash, wear gloves and only pick up paper or cardboard trash. It's safest to leave glass, cans, and other sharp objects for other green neighbors to pick up.
