Social media is a powerful tool you can use to raise awareness about the Week of the Young Child™ (WOYC). Here are some ideas you can use for various social networking sites.
- Create an event page for your WOYC celebration. Include important details like the date, time, and location of your celebration and then share the link with your Facebook fans and/or friends. Encourage supporters to RSVP to your event page and to share the event with their Facebook friends.
- Post updates and information about your celebration and the WOYC regularly to your Facebook page in the weeks and months leading up to your celebration. Include links that people can click on to find out more information, such as to your organization’s website and the WOYC area of the NAEYC website.
- Upload photos or videos from your event after the celebration to share with supporters. Be sure to obtain permission from individuals and families if you will be posting images of people, particularly children.
-
Create polls or post open-ended questions to encourage interaction and engagement. For example, you could ask questions like:
- “What does the Week of the Young Child mean to you?”
- “Why is it important to help children learn when they’re very young?”
- “How do you know the school or center your child goes to is the right place for him or her?”
- Reach out to policy makers, members of the media, local businesses, allied organizations, and community leaders who are on Facebook by writing on their wall or sending them a Facebook message.
- “Like” NAEYC on Facebook. We’ll be posting periodic messages in the coming months about WOYC that you can share with your fans and friends.
- Post updates and information about your celebration and the WOYC regularly to your Twitter page in the weeks and months leading up to your celebration.
- Include links in your tweets that people can click on to find out more information, such as to your organization’s website and the WOYC area of the NAEYC website.
- Shorten links before posting them by using a link-shortening website like bit.ly or Google URL shortener.
- Use the #WOYC and hashtag in your tweets so that people can find your content. Some other common hashtags for the early childhood field include #ece, #earlyed, #childcare, #preschool, #prek, #kindergarten, #toddlers, and #infants.
- Search for the #WOYC hashtag to find other individuals, groups, and organizations tweeting about the Week of the Young Child™ and retweet their content.
- Reach out to policy makers, members of the media, local businesses, allied organizations, and community leaders who are on Twitter by sending them an @ message or a direct message.
- Follow NAEYC on Twitter. We’ll be posting periodic messages in the coming months about WOYC that you can retweet to your followers. Our main account is @naeyc, but you can also follow our Conference account (@naeycAC) and our Institute account (@naeycINST).
Photo Sharing Websites (e.g. Flickr, Picasa, Instagram, etc.)
- Take photos of your WOYC celebration and upload them to your favorite photo sharing website, like Flickr, Picasa, or Instagram.
- Use rich keywords and text to write captions that describe what’s going on in your pictures. This will help other people to find your images and help people who were not at your event to understand what was happening.
- Include the keywords “WOYC” and “Week of the Young Child” in the photo captions or keywords.
- Share your pictures and albums with your friends and supporters, such as by posting to Facebook, Twitter, or your organization’s website.
YouTube
- Shoot video of your WOYC celebration and then upload it to YouTube. Use the keywords “Week of the Young Child” and “WOYC” when describing your video to help people find it.
-
Share your video with supporters by posting it to your organization’s website or Facebook page or tweeting the video link your Twitter followers.
- Create a WOYC board and use it to pin content to help you plan or share your celebration, such as activity ideas, pictures from your event, articles in your local newspaper about your celebration, or other interesting content.
- Use the phrase “Week of the Young Child” and “WOYC” when describing your pins so that others can find them.
