On May 22, the House of Representatives narrowly voted to pass a budget bill that would harm many children, families, and educators. If approved by the Senate and signed into law, this legislation would make it harder for families and educators to access health care, food assistance, and education by cutting Medicaid, SNAP, and higher education. Daniel Hains, NAEYC’s Chief Policy and Professional Advancement Officer issued the following statement about the bill’s passage.
“If they are signed into law, the proposed cuts that members of the House of Representatives voted to advance in the early hours of this morning will devastate early childhood educators and the children and families they serve. Make no mistake, the choices the House made last night will strip health insurance from educators and families who need it, increase their risk of facing hunger and make it harder for them to advance their own education. This bill also will risk stifling the bipartisan progress that states across the country have made to invest in early education and educators, forcing them to make cuts to essential programs on which families rely. We call on senators to reject this harmful approach and instead make the choice to invest in the supports families and educators need to thrive.”
