Joy and Belonging in Early Childhood Education: A Full-Circle Story
As part of NAEYC’s centennial, Year of Reflections highlights the journeys, relationships, and defining moments that shape careers in early childhood education. June’s theme—Joy, Belonging & Cross-Generational Wisdom—centers the powerful connections between educators, children, and families, and the ways those relationships evolve over time.
In this reflection, Amanda shares how an unexpected return to a familiar program led her to discover a lifelong calling in early childhood education, grounded in mentorship, recognition, and a deep sense of belonging.
"I found my way to early childhood education unexpectedly. I began as a student in a latch-key program, where I was guided by Ms. G., an educator whose presence left a lasting impression on me. At the time, I did not envision a future in education; it was simply a place where I felt supported and known.
Years later, I agreed to substitute in the same program as a favor to a friend who was a program director. On my first training day, Ms. G. immediately recognized me. She remembered my time as a student and even spoke about my family. What began as an awkward moment quickly turned into a powerful sense of belonging—like finding a missing puzzle piece. That recognition and continuity helped me realize the profound impact educators can have across time.
Working alongside passionate professionals like Ms. G., and forming meaningful connections with students and families, gradually changed my perspective. I discovered that the relationships at the heart of early childhood education were deeply fulfilling, and I could no longer imagine myself in another field. What started as a temporary role evolved into a career as I progressed through various positions within the program.
Today, I serve as the director of the very program that once shaped me. I now have the privilege of building the same connections with students—many of whom are now adults—that were so influential in my own journey. Several former students are pursuing careers in education and gaining experience within our program, which has been especially rewarding to witness.
Looking back, my path into early childhood education was shaped by mentorship, meaningful relationships, and a strong sense of belonging. Seeing the journey come full circle, both for myself and for those I now mentor, has affirmed my commitment to the field and the lasting impact of caring, connected educators."
