Winter 2025 TYC Self Study Series on STEM: Invent It!

  You are here
The NAEYC Self-Study Series is a compilation of selected topics related to early childhood education and published in Teaching Young Children. The purpose of the series is to support early childhood educators in refining their practices to develop intentional teaching strategies, foster equitable learning environments, and ground learning experiences for children in developmentally appropriate practice (DAP). You will gain invaluable knowledge, insights, and strategies from some of the leading voices in the field that you can test and try in your own setting.
For the Winter 2025 Teaching Young Children issue, the self-study article is “Invent It! STEM Activities to Stretch Children’s Imaginations and Problem-Solving Skills.”
Through this self-study, you will learn to:

- Define design challenge.
- Identify essential phases of design challenges as children use a flexible, iterative process to solve problems.
- Tailor design challenges to meet every learner’s needs, based on children’s knowledge, skills, abilities, and interests.
- Implement activities in your setting to support and challenge children’s imaginations and problem-solving skills.
